The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has issued a circular concerning “Containerships” (laden/ballast) directly coming from ports in “North-West Europe” and directly heading to (Port Klang) port and its Eastern ports in the “Far East”.
This circular (8/2023) was issued on 13 October 2023 and will be effective from 15 January 2024 until 30 June 2024.
Containerships traveling directly from ports in North-West Europe, including Tangier port, departing from Algeciras port and heading straight to Port Klang and its Eastern ports in South-East Asia and the Far East, are exempt from the 15% increase in standard transit fees outlined in paragraph (a) of Circular (7/2023).
Conditions for Applying the Circular:
- Companies seeking this exemption must request it through their shipping agency before the vessel departs, providing vessel details, ports, ETA, and cargo info.
- The vessel must not make commercial stops at intermediate ports. If it does, a certificate explaining the stop's purpose is required.
- Documents for exemption approval must be submitted within one year from the vessel's transit.
- The shipping agency must pledge to pay the exemption amount if the vessel violates any of the circular's conditions.
