Rules for Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships released by ClassNK

The Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has released the Rules for Anti-Fouling Systems on Ships/Guidance.

Application

These Rules apply to anti-fouling systems used on ships classified by ClassNK (referred to as "the Society") and intended for registration under Chapter 3 of the Regulations for the Classification and Registry of Ships.

These systems are designed to control or prevent the attachment of unwanted organisms.

However, the Rules do not apply to anti-fouling systems on ships that are less than 24 meters in length.

Anti-fouling systems that do not fully comply with the Rules may be accepted if the Society deems them equivalent to the specified requirements.

Kinds of Surveys

The following surveys apply to anti-fouling systems on registered or intended-to-be-registered ships:

  1. Surveys for registration (referred to as Registration Surveys)

    a) Registration Surveys during Construction: These surveys are conducted prior to the application of anti-fouling systems, specifically for ships undergoing Classification Surveys during Construction.

    b) Registration Surveys not built under the Survey: Other registration surveys that are not covered in (a) above.
  2. Surveys for maintaining registration (referred to as Registration Maintenance Surveys)

    a) Periodical Surveys

    b) Occasional Surveys

    c) Unscheduled Surveys

These Rules have been released on 28 June 2023 and are in force from 1 July 2023.
