RINA's updated rules for fixed fire extinguishing systems in ship machinery spaces

Classification Society RINA has issued rules and amendments for fixed fire extinguishing systems in ship machinery spaces.

These rules and amendments came into force on 1 May 2024.

Here is the breakdown:

  1. Rules for Fixed Aerosol Fire-Extinguishing Systems: This section provides comprehensive guidelines for evaluating and approving fixed aerosol fire-extinguishing systems in ship machinery spaces. It includes details on test report contents, test procedures for efficiency coefficient assessment of aerosol generators, and testing protocols for system efficacy against various fire types. Specific requirements and testing methodologies are outlined, tailored to ship size and machinery space dimensions.
  2. Amendments to Aerosol Fire-Extinguishing System Rules: Amendments have been introduced across several chapters, including General Requirements for Approval, Test Methods for Ships with Specific Dimensions, and Efficiency Coefficient Determination.
  3. Rules for Fixed Clean Agent Fire-Extinguishing Systems: This section offers guidance on testing fixed gas fire-extinguishing systems in ship machinery spaces. It covers sampling, test methodologies, equipment requirements, and specific regulations for different fire-extinguishing systems based on machinery space sizes. The evaluation method focuses on the effectiveness of fixed aerosol systems.
  4. Amendments to Clean Agent Fire-Extinguishing System Rules: Amendments have been incorporated into various chapters, including General Requirements, Test Methods for Different Ship Sizes, and Efficiency Coefficient Testing.
  5. Rules for Fixed Dry Chemical Powder Fire-Extinguishing Systems: This section outlines a testing procedure to evaluate the effectiveness of extinguishing systems against various fire types. It covers test environment, equipment, test programs for different space volumes, installation criteria, and agent quality. Specific requirements for test reports and regulations for type approval are provided.
  6. Amendments to Dry Chemical Powder Fire-Extinguishing System Rules: Amendments have been introduced across General Approval Requirements and Test Method chapters.
