Recommendations for IGC Code type C tanks published by IACS
The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has published recommended procedure for the finite element analysis to assess yielding, buckling, and fatigue strength of IGC Code type C tanks.
Scope and Applicability
This document offers general insights and suggestions for conducting finite element analysis on tanks of the type C category, characterized by single cylinders and multi-lobe shapes, as defined by the IGC Code.
The document does not encompass considerations for corrosion allowance. The Classification Society may address corrosion allowance based on specific requirements.
Assessment of Yield Strength
When the prescribed criteria of individual Classification Societies cannot adequately evaluate the structural integrity of a type C tank – particularly at stress concentration points like structural discontinuities near tank supports, Y-connections in multi-lobe tanks, or tanks with innovative designs – a supplementary finite element analysis may be necessary. This document (Rec 174 New) has been released on 1 July 2023.
