PRS updates Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships (parts V, VI,VIII and IX)
The Polish Register of Shipping (PRS) has recently revised its Rules for the Classification and Construction of Sea-Going Ships (MOR) across several critical sections.
These updates were published on 11 June and enter into force on 1 July 2024.
Part V of the MOR, focusing on Fire Protection, has been updated to include new provisions aligned with recent EU regulations. Notably, these changes reflect updated technical specifications and testing standards for fire hoses as stipulated in Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2024/1295. Additionally, corrections and revisions to existing guidelines such as MSC/Circ.1312/Corr.1 and IACS UI SC 120/Rev.2 have been incorporated to ensure comprehensive fire safety measures on board sea-going vessels.
In Part VI, which addresses Ship and Machinery Piping Systems, amendments highlight the use of non-combustible materials like steel for ventilation ducts, emphasizing compliance with stringent safety standards (UI SC264). Also, adjustments in machinery installations, specifically regarding service tank arrangements (UI SC123), and enhanced safety measures for chemical treatment fluids used in exhaust gas cleaning systems (UR M81) underscore PRS's commitment to operational safety and environmental protection.
Part VIII covers Electrical Installations and Control Systems, where updates include the integration of PRS's own publications to reflect current technological advancements and best practices in electrical engineering for marine applications.
Part IX on Materials and Welding introduces amendments that specify material requirements for Brittle Crack Arrest Steels (IACS UR W31 Rev. 3 May 2023) and mechanical testing standards for steel castings (IACS UR W8 Rev. 4 May 2024). These changes are designed to ensure the structural integrity and reliability of ship materials under varying operational conditions.
