PRS issues Guidelines for the Safety of Ships using Methyl or Ethyl Alcohol as Fuel

Due to increased commitment from the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to reduce Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from shipping, the use of alternative fuels has become more widely adopted by the marine industry. Due to their specific properties, they require additional safety measures in relation to typical oil fuels, which is the reason for development of specific guidelines for the use of such fuels.

Polish Register of Shipping (PRS) has recently issued an Informative Publication that applies to marine and inland waterways ships and floating facilities, supervised and classed by PRS, whose main propulsion and auxiliary devices are powered by methyl/ethyl alcohol.

The Publication has been developed based on the Interim Safety Guidelines for Ships Using Methyl/Ethyl Alcohol as Fuel, contained in MSC.1/Circ.1621, while principles for materials and fittings, storage, preparation and distribution of low flashpoint liquid fuel should comply with IGF Code.

The document became effective on the day of its publication, which is 08 August 2022.
