The Panama Canal Authority on 25 July 2023 issued an advisory regarding the additional measures to mitigate the extended dry season, effective 30 July 2023.

Due to the rainy season arriving in the Isthmus of Panama, the Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has taken water-saving measures to counter the effects of the prolonged dry season in the Canal watershed.

However, more actions are needed to prevent further draft restrictions in the coming weeks.

As of July 30, 2023, the daily transit capacity will be adjusted to an average of 32 vessels per day, distributed between the Panamax and Neopanamax locks with 10 vessels in the Neopanamax locks and 22 vessels in the Panamax locks.

Further adjustments may occur based on Gatun Lake levels, weather forecasts, and vessel types.

During the 2nd and 3rd Booking Period, priority in slot assignments for the Panamax locks will be given to full container vessels, followed by other vessel types based on customer ranking.

The modification for Booking Period 3 starts on August 1, 2023, and for Booking Period 2 on August 19, 2023.

Applications for reserved slots under the new allocation will be accepted from 0900 hours on Saturday, July 29, 2023.

A reduction in daily transits will inevitably increase waiting times for vessels, especially those without reservations.

It is recommended that all customers use the Transit Reservation System to minimize potential delays.

The ACP may introduce additional measures and procedures to ensure the Canal's safe and efficient operation.
