ABS updates the Guide for Exhaust Emission Abatement

Due to MARPOL Annex VI Regulations 13 and 14 requirements for nitrogen oxide emissions from diesel engines and sulphur oxide emissions from all fuel-burning equipment on board, ABS updated its Guide for Exhaust Emission Abatement.

The Guide has been developed in order to provide guidance for the design and construction of exhaust emission abatement systems, focusing on SOx scrubbers, SCR systems, and EGR arrangements, and may be applied to all vessel types.

An exhaust emission abatement system is considered to be fully approved upon verification of compliance with both the ABS requirements and the applicable IMO Regulations and Guidelines.

The Guide covers only the Classification approval aspects, and statutory approval would be made by ABS as a separate parallel process in the capacity of a Recognized Organization for the vast majority of flag Administrations.

Changes to Guide for Exhaust Emission Abatement

The February 2022 edition of the Guide includes updates to Section 1 of the Guide for clarification of requirements where a notation is not requested for an exhaust emission abatement system, and minor updates to section 4 for control, monitoring, and safety shutdown systems pertaining to EGR Systems.

The Guide becomes effective on the 1st of February. However, for certain changes that have a major impact on shipyards, designers, and vendors, ABS has instituted a delayed implementation to give the industry more time to prepare for these changes.
