Liberia Maritime Authority has issued Marine Security Bulletin 18/2024 regarding a missile attack in the Bab El Mandeb Strait.
This bulletin underscores the heightened risks in the region and emphasizes the importance of enhanced security measures and vigilance for vessels operating in these waters.
- Incident Details: On July 10, a tanker vessel in the Bab El Mandeb Strait observed an explosion in the water near its location (12-38.9N 043-22.7E), about 8.5 nautical miles west of Mayyun Island. The missile landed within 600 meters of the tanker and nearby vessels but did not cause any damage or injuries. The tanker continued its journey without incident.
- Security Alert: For Liberian-flagged vessels navigating the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, and Arabian Sea:
- Increased Security Level: Raise to Security Level 3. Implement all protective measures as outlined in the Ship Security Plan.
- Port Avoidance: Avoid calling at ports in Yemen due to recent attacks on commercial vessels.
- Company Discretion: The decision to transit through these areas should be based on the company's risk assessment considering recent threats.

- Private Maritime Security: Consider employing Private Maritime Security Companies (PMSC) for added security, either armed or unarmed.
