KR releases report on safe transport of electric vehicles on PCTCs

Korean Register (KR) has issued a report addressing the safe transport of electric vehicles on Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs).

Electric vehicle fires are notoriously difficult to fully extinguish once they start, which raises serious concerns for PCTCs that carry large volumes of vehicles, including electric ones, as such fires could escalate into major incidents. To tackle these risks, KR hosted a HAZID (Hazard Identification) workshop earlier this year, gathering specialists from various sectors, including PCTC operators, shipbuilders, and the National Fire Research Institute, to explore fire safety measures for electric vehicles on these ships.

The newly released report compiles expert input from the workshop and identifies the fire hazards posed by electric vehicles on PCTCs. It provides an in-depth analysis of safety recommendations to be considered during both shipbuilding and operation, aimed at enhancing fire safety for electric vehicle transport.

 KIM Yeontae, Executive Vice President of KR’s Technical Division, commented, “We expect this report to serve as a valuable guideline for PCTC operators and shipyards. KR will continue to provide technical services to support the safe construction and operation of ships.”
