Korean Register releases the Guidelines for Approval-In-Principle

Korean Register (KR) has released the Guidelines for Approval-In-Principle (AIP). Document GL-0039-E was released on 31 October 2023.

These non-mandatory Guidelines provide practical technical materials for ship owners, operators, shipyards, designers, and manufacturers.

The document outlines the process for obtaining AIP, which is a preliminary approval of a proposed design concept.

The AIP process involves demonstrating the feasibility of the proposed design, assessing key design elements, identifying relevant failure modes, and conducting appropriate analysis.

The document also provides guidance on technical documentation evaluation and review, including the application of rules and regulations and the selection of examination direction.

The guidelines emphasize the importance of considering potential safety and quality impacts and consulting with designers to address any problems or risks.

The document is periodically updated to reflect changes in technology and industry standards.

Overall, the 2023 Guidelines for Approval-In-Principle provide a comprehensive framework for obtaining AIP and ensuring the safety and quality of ship designs.
