IRClass issues new I.C. engine approval guidelines
Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) has published new Classification Notes on approval of I.C. engines.
The document was published on 1 December 2023.
The document outlines procedures for approving Internal Combustion (I.C.) Engines and Turbochargers, effective from July 1, 2024. It covers certification requirements for engine components and turbochargers, with specific amendments listed. It outlines the process flow between the engine designer, IRS Plan Approval Centre, engine builder/licensee, and IRS's Surveyors. Existing approvals are valid unless engines undergo significant changes. The document supersedes previous editions and includes details on methanol-fueled engines. Amendments, detailed in Table 1, become effective on July 1, 2024, focusing on certification processes and containment tests for turbochargers.
