India: Revalidation of Certificate of Competency of Masters and Deck Officers, effective 1 August 2023

The Directorate General of Shipping, India has published a merchant shipping notice about the revalidation of Nautical grade Certificate of Competency (CoC) of Masters and Deck Officers.

This merchant shipping notice was published on 14 June 2023.

The International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW, 1978) was adopted in 1978 and has been ratified by 167 countries. India ratified it in 1984.

The Directorate has issued notices regarding Continued Professional Competence (CPC) for seafarers.

The latest notice, M.S. Notice No. 05 of 2023, supersedes previous notices and mandates a three-day revalidation course for Nautical grade CoCs.

The course covers recent amendments, safety, pollution prevention, and inspections.

It is effective from 1 August 2023.

Refresher training is advised every five years for Masters and Deck Officers.
