India releases 2023 annual report on maritime incidents

The casualty circular containing the annual report of 2023 by the DG Communication Centre on reported incidents has been released by the Directorate General of Shipping, India.

This document was published on 23 February 2024.

The international shipping industry, responsible for about 80% of global trade volume, relies heavily on its workforce of over 1.6 million seafarers worldwide.

Recognizing the importance of analyzing marine casualties and incidents to improve safety and protect the marine environment, the Directorate General of Shipping has established an online platform, the DG COMM Centre, for reporting and collecting incident data.

DG COMM Centre maintains an online module for reporting all types of marine casualties, including those on Indian vessels worldwide, involving Indian and non-Indian seafarers, and non-Indian vessels within Indian waters.

The detailed breakdown of incidents, along with summaries and lessons learned, is provided in Annexure I for reference and continuous improvement. This annual report aims to be a valuable resource for stakeholders to understand, address, and prevent maritime incidents, promoting a safer global maritime environment.
