At the 76th session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) the amendments to MARPOL Annex VI were adopted. The amendments will enter into force on November 1st, 2022.
Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships (MARPOL Annex VI) addresses air pollution from ocean-going ships. The international requirements of Annex VI establish limits on nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions and require the use of fuel with lower sulfur content.
This Annex has been completely revised.
The provisions of this annex shall apply to all ships, except where expressly provided otherwise.
The Annex details surveys, certification, and means of control. Additionally, the requirements for the control of emissions from ships are stated. Regulations on the carbon intensity of international shipping as well as the verification of compliance with the provisions of this annex are described.
Also, there are eleven appendices attached with all the forms and information needed in order to comply with the requirements set by this annex.
