IMO updates National contact points responsible for urgent reports involving harmful substances

International Maritime Organization (IMO) has issued updated List of national operational contact points responsible for the receipt, transmission and processing of urgent reports on incidents involving harmful substances, including oil from ships to coastal states. The list is updated on a quarterly basis, the last update being July 31.

Regulation 37 of MARPOL Annex I requires that oil tankers of 150 gross tonnage and above and all ships of 400 gross tonnage and above carry an approved Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plan (SOPEP). The SOPEP must include a list of agencies or officials responsible for receiving and processing reports on incidents involving oil and/or harmful substances.

Regulation 17 of MARPOL Annex II makes similar stipulations that all ships of 150 gross tonnage and above carrying noxious liquid substances in bulk carry an approved shipboard marine pollution emergency plan for noxious liquid substances.
