IMO: Report on the 61st session of the GESAMP Working Group on harmful substances transported by ships
The International Maritime Organization published the report detailing the proceedings of the sixty-first session of the GESAMP Working Group on the Evaluation of the Hazards of Harmful Substances Carried by Ships, which took place from May 13 to 17, 2024.
The session focused on assessing the hazards associated with substances transported by ships.
During the meeting, updates were provided on decisions and actions from related organizations such as GESAMP, ESPH, and PPR. These updates are important as they influence the Working Group’s work on evaluating harmful substances. The group evaluated new substances proposed for ship transport, assessing their potential environmental and safety hazards to ensure proper management.
The session also involved re-evaluating previously assessed substances to incorporate new information and address emerging concerns. This process ensured that risk profiles and classifications were up-to-date. Additionally, the group discussed and resolved issues related to the classification of hazardous substances, including reviewing and potentially revising classification criteria to accurately reflect the associated risks.
Efforts were made to update and consolidate existing data files on hazardous substances, including correcting inaccuracies and integrating new information to maintain comprehensive and reliable data. Strategies for effective communication and publication of the Working Group’s findings were also discussed, focusing on how to share hazard profiles and updates with stakeholders and the public.
Other topics not covered in the main agenda were addressed, including procedural matters and relevant issues raised by members. The report was reviewed and adopted, formalizing the session's outcomes and setting the groundwork for future actions.
Annexes included a list of attendees, summaries of decisions from previous meetings of GESAMP, ESPH, and PPR, detailed profiles for new substances submitted for evaluation, a revised list of all substances evaluated, and a provisional agenda for the sixty-second session.
