IACS updated the Unified Interpretations for the hull survey for new construction
The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has updated the Unified Interpretations for the hull survey for new construction.
This Unified Interpretations document (UR Z23 Rev7 Corr2 CLN) was published on 1 May 2023.
These requirements ensure compliance with classification rules and statutory regulations.
They involve examining ship parts, appraising manufacturing procedures, witnessing inspections and tests, and evaluating materials and equipment used in ship construction.
The UR includes examining ship parts for compliance with rules and regulations and appraising manufacturing procedures, including welding.
Inspections and tests are witnessed, covering materials, welding, and geometry verification.
However, material and equipment appraisal at works are not included.
The UR applies to new steel ship construction, excluding specific cases defined in SOLAS, high-speed craft, and mobile offshore drilling units.
It covers statutory items related to the hull structure and coating.
However, the manufacture of certain equipment and fittings is not covered.
Acceptance of these items is verified through documentation from a class surveyor.
The UR also covers the installation, welding, and testing of specific items, as well as equipment ensuring watertight and weather-tight integrity.
It applies to shipbuilders' facilities, sub-contractors' facilities, and other remote locations.
Revision 7 aims to enhance the survey process for new construction, ensuring consistency across IACS Societies and maintaining quality and compliance in steel ships.
The changes introduced in Revision 7 of the UR are to be uniformly implemented by IACS Societies on ships contracted for construction from 1 July 2021.
