IACS requirements for container securing systems and lashing software

The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has released two new Unified Requirements for approval and certification of container securing systems and requirements for lashing software.

These two requirements were published on 1 May 2024 and will enter into force on 1 July 2025.

The IACS requirements for container securing systems outline minimum standards for seagoing container ships. They include guidelines for fixed and portable container securing fittings, arrangement plans, supporting structure drawings, cargo access, stowage and securing plans, and lashing software. Approval and certification involve prototype and production testing to ensure fittings meet strength standards. Detailed plans must be approved and accessible onboard for compliance and safety purposes.

The IACS requirements for lashing software specify that all container ships must use approved lashing software to analyze forces on container stacks, supplementing the Cargo Securing Manual. The software must include an operation manual, handle various loading conditions, and ensure accuracy with less than 1% deviation. Approval involves verification of ship data, test conditions, and installation checks. Annual and special surveys are required to verify accuracy and manual availability, with protections against unauthorized modifications.
