The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) has released a Recommendation document relating to the measurement of underwater radiated noise.
This document (REC 176 New) was issued on 1 September 2023.
General
These Recommendations pertain to safety concerns and practical experiences when operating with large vessels in open waters.
The objective of these Recommendations is to standardize and present a unified approach for quantifying underwater radiated noise.
They outline a consistent method for analysis, post-processing, and reporting standards.
Scope
These guidelines specifically focus on the measurement of continuous underwater radiated noise emitted by ships, using three omnidirectional hydrophones.
This document does not encompass other forms of anthropogenic underwater noise, such as impulsive noise generated by activities like pile driving, coastal civil engineering, active sonar, seismic surveys, or those arising from activities like dredging and tunneling.
