Guidance on Implementation of MARPOL Annex VI 2020 Global Sulphur Limit published by Liberia

Liberia Maritime Authority has published the Guidance on Implementation of MARPOL Annex VI 2020 Global Sulphur Limit.

This marine advisory note was published on 30 May 2023.

It is addressed to all ship owners, operators, masters, and recognized organizations.

Revisions:

  1. The US link to the new USCG Work Instructions on MARPOL Annex VI enforcement has been updated.
  2. The link to the latest AMSA policy on the use of EGCS in Australian waters has been updated.

The purpose of this Advisory is to offer guidance on the implementation of the global Sulphur limit, which became effective on January 1, 2020.

Starting from March 1, 2020, the limit for Sulphur in fuel oil used or carried for use on ships operating outside designated emission control areas (ECA) has been reduced from 3.50% m/m to 0.50% m/m (mass by mass).

Since the introduction of the global Sulphur limit, we have received numerous inquiries related to preparation, implementation, operation, and enforcement, including questions regarding Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems (EGCS).
