DNV: Validation of Attribute Claims for Low Carbon and Renewable Hydrogen and Ammonia

Classification Society DNV has published a "service specification" document entitled Validation of Attribute Claims for Low Carbon and Renewable Hydrogen and Ammonia.

Objective

This specification describes DNV's services for independently assessing and validating statements/declarations made by hydrogen and ammonia producers regarding greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental claims.

Scope

This specification outlines the processes DNV follows to validate attribute claims made by companies regarding the production and delivery of low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia.

DNV's validation statements can be used by hydrogen producers to demonstrate compliance with national and international standards for renewable and low-carbon hydrogen.

Services covered in this specification include advisory, verification, and validation services, encompassing various pathways of hydrogen production (conventional, electrolysis-based, and novel pathways) as well as ammonia production associated with these hydrogen pathways.

Application

This specification applies to organizations involved in hydrogen or ammonia production and delivery.

It enables validation of their systems or products with specific attributes, such as maintaining greenhouse gas emissions below a predefined threshold.

The validation process outlined in Section 4 is globally applicable and can be adjusted to meet regional standards and requirements.

Relevant standards mentioned include the Renewable Energy Directive (EU) (REDII), EU taxonomy, Renewable Transportation Fuel Obligation (UK) (RTFO), Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard (UK), Green Hydrogen Standard, US Clean Hydrogen Production Standard, ISCC Plus, China Hydrogen Alliance Standard, and South Korean Hydrogen Economy Promotion and Hydrogen Safety Management Act.

This document was published on 1 May 2023.
