Classification Society DNV has published a "class programme" document with updates on the type approval scheme for ballast water management systems.
This document was published on 1 May 2023.
These revised guidelines have been issued to comply with updated DNV rules and IMO/IACS regulations.
The document incorporates new requirements, such as cyber security approval, and optional approval procedures for containerized systems and Type Approval Design Certification (TADC).
The objective of this class programme (CP) is to describe the type approval (TA) scheme for ballast water management systems (BWMS) based on the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention and DNV rules.
This document outlines the process for obtaining type approval (TA) and Type Approval Design Certification (TADC) for BWMS. It confirms compliance with the BWMS Code and the BWMS design requirements in DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch.7 Sec.1 [3.3] and DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch.7 Sec.1 [3.5].
Additional requirements should be specified in the TA application.
For cyber security and containerized systems approval, refer to DNV-CP-0231 and DNV-CP-0553, respectively.
USCG 46 CFR 162.060 is not covered.
The procedures and requirements in this CP apply to obtaining a DNV TA certificate based on IMO Resolution MEPC.300(72), Res. MEPC.169(57) (G9), DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch.7 Sec.1, and DNV-CG-0339.
Note that a type approval certificate does not exempt the installation approval required by DNV-RU-SHIP Pt.6 Ch.7 Sec.1 [3.4].
