DNV issues guidelines for heave compensating systems

Classification Society DNV, in June 2024, issued the new recommended practice DNV-RP-N202 regarding heave compensating systems in offshore lifting operations.

Heave compensating systems (HCS) are crucial in offshore lifting operations to manage dynamic effects and ensure safety. This document outlines best practices developed from a joint industry project involving multiple companies. It aligns with international standards and provides guidelines for designing, verifying, procuring, and operating HCS. The scope includes terminology, key design parameters, performance criteria, and validation requirements for both active and passive HCS using steel wire rope. It applies to offshore lifting operations in air and subsea but excludes applications like drilling or personnel transfer systems. The RP emphasizes the need for assessing risks, considering contingencies, and aligning with related standards for comprehensive system safety.
