Classification Society Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) has amended its Rules for Marine Pollution Prevention Systems as well as the accompanying Guidance. Both documents were amended due to adoption and entry into force of Resolution MEPC.340(77), which had revised the 2015 Guidelines for Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems.
Amendments to Rules and Guidance for Marine Pollution Prevention Systems
Correspondingly to MEPC.340(77), the amendments clarify the frequency and accuracy of measurements to be monitored and recorded for the overboard discharging of water. Moreover, requirements for daily checking and recording of Emission Ratios relating to EGCS adopting Scheme A for which inspection and approval based on operational parameter monitoring is required, were also amended.
The amendments were issued on 30 May 2022 and became effective on 01 June 2022. However, the current requirements apply to exhaust gas cleaning systems other than those that fall under the following:
- EGCS which are installed on ships at beginning stage of construction on or after 01 June 2022
- EGCS which are installed on ships at beginning stage of construction before 01 June 2022 to which either of the following apply: EGCS for which the contractual delivery date to ships is on or after 01 June 2022, or EGCS which in the absence of the contractual delivery date, the actual delivery date is on or after 01 June 2022
- Existing exhaust gas cleaning systems which undertake performance impacting conversions on or after 01 June 2022.
