CCS: Rules for Construction and Classification of Sea-Going High Speed Craft

China Classification Society (CCS) has published the Rules for Construction and Classification of Sea-Going High Speed Craft, and related amendments.

These documents were published on January 10th, 2023, and became effective on July 1st, 2022.

These Rules apply to the craft with the maximum speed V ≥ 3.7 ▽ 0.1667 m/s, where: ▽ is displacement corresponding to the design waterline, in m3; and V is the speed achieved at the maximum continuous propulsion power for which the craft is certified at the maximum operational weight and in smooth water.

The craft above mentioned include:

  • high speed passenger craft (including high speed ro-ro passenger craft) which do not proceed in the course of their voyage more than 4 h at operational speed from a place of refuge when fully laden;
  • high speed cargo craft of 500 gross tonnage and upwards which do not proceed in the course of their voyage more than 8 h at operational speed from a place of refuge when fully laden; and
  • high speed cargo craft of less than 500 gross tonnage which does not proceed in the course of their voyage more than 8 hours at operational speed from a place of refuge when fully laden, reference may be made to the provisions of the Rules.

Except as specified above, this document does not apply to:

  • craft of war;
  • pleasure craft not engaged in trade;
  • craft not propelled by mechanical means;
  • fishing craft; and
  • wooden craft.

CCS Rules for Classification of Small Sea-Going Boats may be applicable where high speed craft is less than 20 m in length.
