Cayman Islands: notice on STCW Convention and Certificate of Competency

Maritime Authority of the Cayman Islands (MACI) has issued a shipping notice regarding the STCW Convention and the issue of endorsements attesting to the recognition of a Certificate of Competency.

This Shipping Notice was published on January 11th, 2023, and is addressed to all owners, managers, charterers, crewing agencies, and masters of Cayman Islands ships, including yachts.

This notice provides details on medical certificates for seafarers, English language requirements, and prevention of drug or alcohol abuse.

It also provides recommendations for the number of crew on pleasure vessels, describes the necessary knowledge of Cayman Islands law, highlights the requirements in the STCW Convention in relation to company responsibilities, the IGF Code, and the Polar Code, and explains the online STCW training.

This document primarily applies to ships subject to STCW and the Maritime Labour Convention 2006. It should be emphasized that section 6 contains instructions for masters of pleasure craft on safe manning.

Also, this Shipping Notice contains a list of countries whose certificates are considered acceptable on ships sailing under the flag of the Cayman Islands.
