Transport Canada has issued a ship safety bulletin (SSB) on amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) for construction and safety equipment.
This safety bulletin was published on 12 January 2024.
Purpose
Amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) that relate to construction and safety equipment came into force on January 1, 2024, and other amendments will come into force on July 1, 2024.
What You Need to Know
The following resolutions have been adopted by the Maritime Safety Committee and come into force in 2024:
RESOLUTION MSC.474(102) in force on January 1, 2024
- Definition of “ships constructed”: amendment to regulation II-1/1.3
- Towing and mooring equipment: amendment to regulation II-1/3-8
- Stability calculation of the factor Si: amendment to regulation II-1/7-2.5
- Collision bulkhead piercing by a pipe: new regulation II-1/12.6.2
- Openings in watertight bulkheads on passenger ships: amendment to regulation II-1/13
- Openings in shell plating of passenger ships and freeboard deck of cargo ships:
- Amendment to regulation II-1/15.9

- Internal watertight integrity on passenger ships:
