Canada issues bulletin about new digital process for marine medical certificates

Transport Canada has published a ship safety bulletin regarding a new digital process for marine medical certificates. The bulletin was published on December 8th, 2022.

This publication aims to inform seafarers and marine stakeholders of the new process for issuing provisional marine medical certificates, which involves the digital submission of Marine Medical Examination Reports to the Transport Canada Marine Medical Unit.

This bulletin provides the following:
• An overview of the new digital process for marine medical certificates.
• A sample of the new look of the printed provisional medical certificates when the digital submission method is being used.

Starting in 2023 a new secure online tool will enable Marine Medical Examiners to complete the Marine Medical Examination Report digitally and digitally submit it to the Transport Canada Marine Medical Unit upon completion.

Another advantage of this new digital process is that upon submission of the Report, the validity of the provisional medical certificate will be immediately verifiable online using the following link:

With this new process, seafarers will still be able to obtain a paper version of their provisional medical certificate at the end of the examination, if determined Fit or Fit with Limitations.

This document also includes Annex A- a sample of the new provisional MMC produced via the online tool, and Annex B - a sample of the current provisional paper MMC.
