BV GREEN PASSPORT: Regulatory framework for hazardous materials management

Classification Society Bureau Veritas (BV) has released a new edition of its rule note on the GREEN PASSPORT.

The GREEN PASSPORT (NR528) outlines the principles and procedures for assigning, maintaining, and renewing the GREEN PASSPORT and GREEN PASSPORT EU notations for ships, ensuring proper inventory and management of hazardous materials.

Section 1: General Principles

• Defines the scope and notations (GREEN PASSPORT and GREEN PASSPORT EU).
• Specifies documentation requirements and reference materials.
• Provides definitions and lists materials exempt from Inventory Part I.

Section 2: New Ships

• Details the process for assigning notations to new ships.
• Outlines responsibilities of shipyards and suppliers.
• Describes the development and preparation of Inventory Part I, including collection and use of hazardous materials information.
• Explains the acknowledgment process by the Society.

Section 3: Existing Ships

• Describes the process for assigning notations to existing ships.
• Specifies hazardous materials to be listed in Inventory Part I.
• Details the initial development of Inventory Part I and the on-board survey process by the Society.
• Explains the acknowledgment and maintenance of Inventory Part I.

Section 4: Maintenance and Renewal

• Lists prohibited or restricted materials.
• Details the maintenance and update of Inventory Part I during ship operation.
• Covers the renewal process for the notations.
