Bahamas Maritime Authority issues notice about the medical care
The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) has issued a marine notice about the requirements for medical care onboard, shipowner liability in relation to sickness, injury, or death occurring in connection with the seafarer's employment, and social security.
This notice was issued on April 14th, 2023, and supersedes BMA Information Bulletin No. 148.
It is addressed to all ship owners, managers, masters, approved nautical inspectors, recognized organizations, and surveyors.
This Marine Notice provides all parties with guidance on the Bahamas’ implementation of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC 2006) requirements for:
.1 medical care onboard;
.2 shipowner liability in relation to sickness, injury, or death occurring
in connection with seafarer's employment;
.3 social security.
This Marine Notice should be read in conjunction with Marine Notices
031 039, 034, and 036.
This applies to all Bahamian registered ships to which the MLC 2006 is applicable as determined by the BMA and outlined in Marine Notice 031.
The Company shall document its procedures in relation to health protection and medical care, including essential dental care, for seafarers working onboard the ship.
