Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) has published the "Guidelines on Lifting Appliances 2023," effective from July 1, 2024, present a new benchmark in the safety and efficiency of lifting appliances used in maritime and offshore sectors.
Scope and Application
- Wide Applicability: The guidelines cover pedestal-mounted rotating heavy-lift gantry, shear leg, and “A”-frame type cranes on ships and offshore structures.
- Exclusions: Notably, the document does not address movable or lifting platforms, cargo ramps, passenger and cargo lifts, lift trucks, and lifeboat davits.
Certification and Class Notations
- Certification Procedures: Emphasizing the issuance of class notations, the guidelines detail the certification processes for lifting appliances, complying with international regulations and standards.
- Compliance with National Regulations: The document reinforces the need for adherence to national regulations of the flag Administration/Coastal State.
Design and Construction Standards
- Materials and Testing: The guidelines specify requirements for materials and testing, ensuring the reliability and durability of lifting appliances.
